INTRODUCTION
Although wife beating has been documented to be one of the global phenomena that affect women irrespective of their status, boundaries and background, it disproportionally affects women more in rural areas, and in particular those with low educational background and with low income status (Igbokwe, Ukwuma & Onugwu, 2012). The act is mostly perpetrated by husbands against their wives under the justification of putting them under control. The act takes the form of hitting, slapping, pushing, holding down, flogging, acid bath and throwing of objects at the victim (Mutiso, Chessa, Chasire & Kemboi, 2010; Oladepo, Yusuf & Arulogun, 2011).
